The Mask
Shocktoberfest 2019 Final Edition

What a long strange trip it was! We begin our Doris Day a Day a thon this weekend. Being married comes with some perks, but it is also duties. My non horror movie loving wife knows this is important to me, so she was willing to do without my presence for the last six weeks, but now it is time to show my appreciation to my greatest obsession, her. Let's get right to it.

Black Sunday
48) Black Sunday (1960) How do you know she's a witch?  A witch's vengeance from beyond the grave makes a true classic of atmospheric horror. Mario Bava and Barbara Steele made an exceedingly well crafted spooky, gothic horror tale. The moment when the witch's cloak falls open to expose her rotting insides is one of  cinema's most shocking moments.

49) The Mask (1961) First Viewing! No budget weirdness-fest for the strange and unusual. Since I myself am strange and unusual, I totally ate this up. Originally filmed in 3D, some of the dream sequences look a little silly now, but seriously, put the mask on now! Put the mask on now!

Godzilla
50) Godzilla (1954) Without Raymond Burr's intrusive American reporter, the original Godzilla (or Gohiro) is a thoughtful and surprisingly poignant mediation on post-atomic bomb life in Japan. Even more moving was the tragedy wrapped in the ending as one character gives his life not just for all of humanity's survival, but also to free the girl he loves. Shakespearean stuff!

Rabid (2019)

51) Rabid (2019) Well, let's end this Shocktoberfest with a remake of the film that started it off. In a nutshell, this was pretty uneven and I was wondering if watching would be a waste of time. Then, holy smokes, she cuts off her own dick and the final third goes straight to crazy town. The Soska sisters deserve an A for effort, but the final project was a C+ or B- at best.

Check out what else I have watched for Shocktoberfest 2019.
